Why Foot Health Matters More with Age

Foot problems are among the most common health complaints in adults over 65. Decades of wear, combined with chronic conditions like diabetes, arthritis, and cardiovascular disease, take a cumulative toll on the feet and ankles. Yet many seniors dismiss foot pain as inevitable — it isn’t.

A podiatrist specializing in geriatric care can identify and treat the root causes of pain, prevent dangerous falls caused by altered gait, manage systemic conditions that affect foot health, and help you stay active and independent longer.

Our Chicago podiatrists treat patients of all ages and understand the unique concerns of older adults — from Medicare coverage to coordination with your primary care physician.

Geriatric Foot Conditions We Treat

From chronic arthritis pain to nail disorders, we provide comprehensive care for the foot conditions most common in seniors.

Very Common

Foot & Ankle Arthritis

Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis can cause significant pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints of the foot and ankle. We offer conservative treatments, custom orthotics, and surgical options when needed.

Neuropathy

Peripheral Neuropathy

Nerve damage — whether from diabetes, medication side effects, or other causes — creates numbness and increases fall risk. We assess neuropathy severity and create prevention strategies tailored to your risk level.

Skin & Nail

Nail & Skin Care

Thick, brittle toenails, fungal infections, ingrown nails, and calluses are common in older adults. Our podiatrists provide safe, professional nail trimming and skin care, especially important for patients with diabetes or circulation issues.

Fall Prevention

Gait & Balance Assessment

Foot pain and structural changes alter the way seniors walk, increasing fall risk. We assess gait mechanics, recommend appropriate footwear and orthotics, and coordinate with physical therapy to improve balance and stability.

Circulation

Vascular & Circulatory Issues

Reduced circulation in the feet is common with age and with conditions like PAD. We assess blood flow, monitor for signs of tissue compromise, and refer for vascular intervention when indicated.

Custom-Fabricated

Custom Orthotics & Footwear

Properly fitted orthotics and diabetic therapeutic shoes redistribute pressure, reduce pain, and protect vulnerable areas — improving comfort and reducing the risk of ulcers and falls.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no specific age threshold, but adults over 60 benefit significantly from annual podiatric exams due to age-related changes in skin thickness, nail health, circulation, and nerve function. If you have diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, or arthritis at any age, earlier and more frequent visits are recommended.

Medicare Part B covers podiatric services that are medically necessary, including treatment of corns, calluses, and nail disorders when a systemic condition like diabetes or peripheral vascular disease is present. A comprehensive diabetic foot exam (one per year) is also covered. Our staff will verify your specific Medicare benefits before your visit.

Yes. Foot pain, deformities, and improper footwear are among the leading contributors to falls in older adults. A podiatrist can assess your gait, recommend appropriate footwear, prescribe custom orthotics to improve stability, and identify foot conditions that are silently altering your walking pattern and increasing fall risk.

Most older adults benefit from visiting a podiatrist at least once or twice a year for a routine exam and nail care. Patients with diabetes, neuropathy, poor circulation, or active foot conditions may need to be seen every 1 to 3 months. Your podiatrist will recommend a schedule based on your individual risk level.

With age, the fat padding on the bottom of the feet naturally thins, arches may flatten, skin becomes drier and more fragile, and toenails can thicken or become brittle. Circulation and nerve sensitivity may also decrease. While these changes are common, they are not inevitable causes of pain or disability — a podiatrist can help manage all of them effectively.

Keep Moving. Keep Living.

Foot pain is not a normal part of aging — it’s a treatable condition. Our Chicago podiatrists specialize in geriatric foot care and are ready to help you stay active, pain-free, and independent.
