Sports Injuries We Treat

The foot and ankle are subjected to enormous forces during athletic activity — running, jumping, cutting, and landing all concentrate stress in these structures. When something goes wrong, accurate diagnosis is critical: a missed stress fracture treated as a sprain heals poorly and can become a career-ending injury.

Our sports podiatry team uses in-office digital X-ray, clinical biomechanical assessment, and a thorough history of your training load and mechanics to identify the true cause of your pain — not just treat the symptom.

We treat athletes at all levels — from high school and college competitors to recreational runners, cyclists, and fitness enthusiasts. Getting back to sport safely is our priority.

Common Athletic Foot & Ankle Injuries

Running

Plantar Fasciitis

The most common running injury — heel and arch pain caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia. We offer shockwave therapy, custom orthotics, and advanced regenerative options for chronic cases.

Overuse

Stress Fractures

Hairline breaks from repetitive loading — most common in the metatarsals and navicular. Early imaging and offloading are essential to prevent complete fracture and long recovery.

Tendon

Achilles Tendinitis & Tears

From insertional to mid-substance tendinopathy, we treat Achilles injuries with targeted eccentric rehabilitation, shockwave therapy, PRP injections, and surgical repair when necessary.

Ankle

Ankle Sprains & Instability

Recurrent ankle sprains often indicate ligamentous instability that requires more than rest. We assess stability, provide bracing and rehab guidance, and perform surgical ligament repair when conservative care fails.

Biomechanics

Gait Analysis & Orthotics

Underlying biomechanical abnormalities — overpronation, high arch, leg length discrepancy — are often the real reason athletes keep getting injured. We perform gait analysis and custom-fabricate orthotics to correct the cause.

Advanced

Shockwave & PRP Therapy

For chronic tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, and soft tissue injuries, extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections offer powerful healing stimulation without surgery or prolonged downtime.

Frequently Asked Questions

No referral is required to see a podiatrist at Michigan Avenue Podiatry. Simply call us or book online. Same-day and next-day appointments are frequently available for acute sports injuries. If your insurance plan requires a referral for specialist care, please check with your insurer before your visit.

Most metatarsal stress fractures heal in 6 to 8 weeks with proper offloading (a stiff-soled shoe, boot, or cast), activity restriction, and nutrition support. The navicular stress fracture — common in runners — can take 3 to 6 months and often requires non-weight-bearing casting. Return to full sport is guided by symptoms, imaging, and a gradual return-to-training protocol.

Yes. Podiatric physicians are primary specialists for Achilles tendon injuries, including insertional and mid-substance tendinopathy, partial tears, and complete ruptures. We offer conservative treatment (eccentric exercise protocols, shockwave therapy, PRP injections, orthotics, bracing) and surgical repair when conservative care has failed.

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) uses acoustic pressure waves to stimulate healing in chronic tendinopathy and plantar fasciitis. It is particularly effective for conditions that have not responded to conventional treatment, typically providing significant pain reduction after 3 to 5 sessions. It is non-invasive, requires no anesthesia, and has a very low complication rate.

Custom foot orthotics correct underlying biomechanical abnormalities — such as overpronation, supination, or leg length discrepancy — that repeatedly stress specific tissues during athletic activity. By improving alignment and distributing load more evenly, orthotics reduce injury recurrence significantly. They are often prescribed alongside a return-to-sport program rather than as a standalone solution.

Get Back in the Game.

Sports injuries don’t have to keep you on the sidelines. Our Chicago sports podiatrists will diagnose your injury accurately, design a return-to-sport plan, and help you train smarter to avoid future setbacks.
