Custom Orthotics

Prescription Custom Orthotics
for Evanston Patients

Custom orthotics are medical-grade shoe inserts prescribed by a podiatrist and fabricated from a precise mold of your foot. Unlike generic drugstore insoles, prescription orthotics are designed to correct your specific biomechanical imbalances — whether that means controlling overpronation, supporting a collapsed arch, redistributing pressure away from a painful area, or accommodating a structural deformity.

At Michigan Avenue Podiatry Clinic, we use advanced scanning technology to capture an exact 3D model of your foot, then work with specialized orthotic labs to produce devices tailored to your condition, activity level, and footwear preferences.

Custom orthotics are commonly prescribed for plantar fasciitis, flat feet, diabetic neuropathy, metatarsalgia, bunions, and chronic ankle instability. Most major insurance plans, including Medicare, provide coverage for prescription orthotics with proper documentation.

Corrects biomechanics — Addresses the root cause of pain, not just symptoms

Prevents injury recurrence — Reduces stress on tendons, joints, and ligaments

Clinically proven — Peer-reviewed research supports custom orthotic efficacy

Insurance covered — Most plans including Medicare cover prescription orthotics

Built for your life — Designed around your shoes, sport, and daily activity

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Foot & Ankle Questions
from Evanston Patients

Morning heel pain is the hallmark symptom of plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia — a thick band of tissue along the bottom of your foot — tightens and contracts overnight while you sleep. When you take your first steps in the morning, the fascia is suddenly stretched, producing sharp, stabbing pain at the heel. Without treatment, this condition typically worsens over time. A podiatrist can confirm the diagnosis and recommend treatments such as custom orthotics, shockwave therapy, stretching protocols, and in some cases, corticosteroid injections.

Yes. Prescription custom orthotics are clinically proven to reduce foot pain, correct biomechanical imbalances, and prevent recurring injuries. Unlike generic drugstore insoles, custom orthotics are molded from a precise 3D scan of your foot and designed to address your specific condition. Peer-reviewed research supports their effectiveness for plantar fasciitis, flat feet, diabetic neuropathy, metatarsalgia, and many other conditions. Most major insurance plans cover prescription orthotics with proper documentation from a podiatrist.

You should see a podiatrist if you experience any of the following: persistent foot or ankle pain lasting more than a few days, heel pain that is worst in the morning, numbness or tingling in your feet, a non-healing wound or sore, toenail discoloration or thickening, a visible deformity like a bunion or hammertoe, a sports injury that limits walking or activity, or if you have diabetes and have not had a foot exam in the past year. Early treatment typically leads to better outcomes and can prevent the need for surgery.

Pain in the ball of the foot — known medically as metatarsalgia — has several possible causes. The most common include Morton’s neuroma (a thickened nerve between the toes), metatarsal stress fractures, sesamoiditis (inflammation of the small bones under the big toe joint), capsulitis, and wearing shoes with inadequate forefoot support. A podiatrist can determine the specific cause through a physical exam and imaging, then recommend treatment ranging from orthotics and footwear changes to injections or surgery.

The fastest path to plantar fasciitis relief combines professional treatment with consistent home care. The most effective approach includes: custom orthotics to support the arch and reduce strain on the plantar fascia, extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) to accelerate tissue healing, daily stretching of the plantar fascia and calf muscles, appropriate footwear with structured arch support, and activity modification to reduce aggravating forces. With a comprehensive treatment plan, most patients experience significant improvement within 4 to 8 weeks.

Modern minimally invasive bunion surgery is significantly less painful than traditional open procedures. Our foot & ankle surgeons use small incisions, specialized instruments, and advanced fixation techniques to correct the bunion with less tissue disruption. Most patients manage post-operative discomfort with over-the-counter pain medication after the first few days and can transition to supportive shoes within weeks. We provide detailed recovery protocols and close follow-up to ensure the best outcome.

Most patients do not need a referral to see our podiatrists. Some insurance plans — particularly HMO plans — may require one. Our team will verify your benefits and referral requirements when you call to schedule. We accept most major insurance plans including Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, United Healthcare, Cigna, Humana, and many others.

Our Downtown Chicago office at 30 N Michigan Avenue, Suite 720, is the most convenient location for Evanston residents. It is located directly across from Millennium Park, near the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Randolph Street. The office is easily accessible via the CTA Red Line to Lake station or the Purple Line Express to the Millennium/Randolph station — approximately 30 minutes from downtown Evanston. Metered street parking and nearby parking garages are also available.

We typically offer same-week availability at all four locations. For urgent foot or ankle problems — such as a suspected fracture, infection, or diabetic wound — we do our best to accommodate same-day or next-day appointments. Call (312) 701-0770 or book online to schedule.

Please bring your insurance card, a photo ID, a list of current medications, and any relevant medical records, imaging, or referral documents. If possible, bring the shoes you most commonly wear — this helps our podiatrists evaluate your gait and foot mechanics. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to complete intake paperwork, or ask about completing forms in advance when you schedule.
