What to expect

A calm, practical visit for your child

We begin by listening to the parent and child, then examine alignment, movement, strength and the area causing symptoms. Imaging is recommended only when it can help answer a clinical question.

1

History and activity review

We discuss symptoms, growth, sports, footwear, previous injuries and what your child is having trouble doing.

2

Foot, ankle and gait examination

The visit may include watching your child stand, walk or run, depending on the concern.

3

A treatment plan you understand

Recommendations may include observation, activity changes, stretching, footwear, orthotics, medication guidance or an in-office treatment.

Bring the shoes your child wears most.

Athletic shoes, school shoes, braces and current inserts can provide helpful clues about alignment and wear patterns.

Pediatric foot-care questions

When should a child see a podiatrist?

Schedule an evaluation when foot or ankle pain persists, your child limps, avoids activity, repeatedly sprains an ankle, has a painful ingrown toenail, or when walking and foot alignment concerns do not improve.

Do children outgrow flat feet?

Many young children have flexible flat feet without symptoms. An examination is appropriate when flat feet cause pain, fatigue, difficulty with activity, uneven shoe wear, or a rigid appearance.

Can a podiatrist treat a child’s ingrown toenail?

Yes. A podiatrist can evaluate the nail, treat infection or inflammation, and discuss conservative care or an in-office procedure when necessary.

Should my child bring athletic shoes to the appointment?

Yes. Bring the shoes your child wears most often, including athletic shoes, along with any braces or inserts. Their wear pattern can provide useful information during the examination.
